So Sus Crystals Interview

Much like your average, garden variety polar bear enthusiast, So Sus is delving into the uncharted waters of 2017. White capping many of us with the launch of the the new collective, Crystals. The newly formed collective has it’s eye’s set on the horizon and have already emerged with an introductory video announcing their launch to Vancouver and beyond, whilst announcing the first compilation due out on the 23rd of this month, entitled, Crystals Vol. 1. We caught up with the Founder, So Sus, to gain some insight into what’s been brewing from the Crystals corner.

Play through the Crystals Vol. 1 Minimix while you get your familiar getting on.

What was the main incentive to start this new collective? Is there a gap in the Vancouver scene that needs filling?

Actually the desire was more created by what I saw online rather than IRL in Vancouver. A few months ago I started a weekly feedback sessions were I would use the first hour of my weekly studio sessions at Feel & Think Studios in Downtown Vancouver to listen to listen to people’s tracks with great sound system in a treated room. I got a good response from this and started to see some really amazing artists who I wanted to push but in my opinion a repost and follow can only go so far. So I decided to go further and get a crew together of some guys whose sound I really liked.

From the outside the collective is obviously focused on putting out music but for the guys involved there’s a lot of stuff that goes on behind the scenes such as feedback on music, release strategies, sharing contacts and obviously dank memes. Really there’s some guys I came across that I want to see succeed so the collective is a way to try pool resources and also it’s great to feel part of something and not just be a guy in your mom’s basement making weird noises.

Did you know all of the members before deciding to run with the idea, or was the idea of a new collective something that attracted the other members?

I knew about half the crew the member from either running into them at shows or just somehow linking up on online spaces such as reddit and soundcloud and having a mutual appreciation for each other’s music.

Who are the current members and where do they hail from?

So there are 11 of us in Crystals So Sus , Angst, Someone Someone and Moxsa all from Vancouver the everyone else is pretty spread across the world with Banora from Croatia , Elex from Ukraine, Ewoke from Germany Favien is our token Australian , Outset and Shwirl are from the good ol’ USA and Troupe is From England.

How long has this project been in the making?

I had the idea for a little while but really started working towards this about 5 months ago. That’s when I came up with the name for the collective and once it had a name became a thing to me.

Have you even helmed a project like this before? You are currently member of a couple really good outlets.

A while back I did head up a collective but I was in my last year of University and most of the member were in University so and it was really hard to keep up with it and school. But I had a small label from LA involved with it that which is was cool cause essentially I made it into a free release sub label for them. But It did also feel at time that I was restricted in what I could do with it since the label was a house music label but I started being interested in trap and other things than four to the floor beats at that time. So I had to make a tough decision to kinda leave it and focus on my solo project as it stylistically it started to change whole lot.

Yeah I’m also part of Sola which is headed by Enshway, Myrne and Awoltalk. Shout out the squaaaaa *Mexican Airhorns*

Is there an avenue that remains untapped as far as collectives go? A clear lane that no one’s been inning yet. You don’t have to spoil er’ if so.

I think a lot of collective are into a sound (think like Soulection) and that’s not what we are about, it’s more about being sonically interesting. At the core with Crystals the aim is to showcase really unknown talents. For example Elex one of our members is seriously one of the craziest producers I have come across but I think he has less than 200 followers on soundcloud, which based on the quality of his music is almost crazy to me. So The collective is meant primarily for guys like him and outlet to push good music no matter who is making it. From what I see a lot of collectives are looking for someone who is already hot or on the come up. At crystals we see potential and wanna grow with people and grow a family.

With all the platforms competing with one another, are you looking to a few that fans and followers can focus on for the majority of Crystals news?

Really the best place to hear about what we are about what we are up to is on Facebook and Twitter but obviously the most important thing is the tunes we drop on Soundcloud. In addition there will be other things such as sample pack sand we hope to also get into some live shows in Vancouver.

How is the focus of releases going to be spent? Is the collective looking towards singles, or more EP / larger project releases?

We plan on releasing larger compilations quarterly. There may be some single sprinkled here and there. But the focus will be the quarterly compilations.

What are the plans for the new year? Crystals has already kicked things off with a nice intro video.

We Plan to drop our first compilation for free on 23 January on soundcloud. It features tracks from all members of the collective. It will be nice to finally share some sounds to describe what we are all about. Also I should mention that anyone is free to submit songs for consideration on future compilations. Lots of work went into that video glad you enjoyed it.

Baron C ✘ 40K & Kandy Space – Stuck On You

A lofty collaboration from some of Vancouver’s hip hop & electronic talent. I met a guy at Celebrities last week and managed to catch his DJ name, Kandy Space. Kandy Space mixes a lot of R&B and does the production for laid back hip hop tracks of Vancouver rappers which everyone can appreciate. SKMB January Selections

Here’s what a few of our members at SKMB have been diggin’ over the past couple of months!

Tune In Space Out Ep.1

‘Tune In Space Out’ is a monthly radio show on DE Radio focused on highlighting our favourite tunes from the world of house and techno. It is grounded in smooth grooves, but also transverse’ the vast array of electronic music that brings us to a state of ear to ear, star to star, spaced out bliss. Our next episode will be airing on DE Radio at 5pm on February 22.

Steph’s Picks @dubsteph_

Gorgon City – No More

Another gem that’s been on repeat on my iPod is Gorgon City’s No More, a pop-centered house jam that features soulful and sultry vocals from Liv; an effortlessly dreamy track to say the least. These talented guys have been pumping out quality tracks within the past year or so and received an overwhelmingly amazing response for their hit song Ready For Your Love in collaboration with rising star MNEK.

Disclosure – Help Me Lose My Mind (SOHN Remix)

Disclosure and London Grammar’s Help Me Lose My Mind was a staple track of mine this past summer, a song that I had instantly fell in love with and shamelessly overplayed. Naturally, I was happy to see that one of my favourite up and comers SOHN produced a remix of it. SOHN’s remix keeps the original moody atmosphere while trading Disclosures bouncy bass synths for something much more mellow and chilling.

Chris Malinchak – So Good To Me (Shiba San Remix)

Every time I hear French Express artist Chris Malinchak’s song So Good To Me, I feel an overwhelming wave of nostalgia and warmth as I remember some of the best nights of my life where this song was being played, or even just talked about. It reminds me so much of my closest friends and a warehouse party that opened up my mind and heart to new experiences and relationships. This song holds such a dear spot in my heart that the chance of coming across a remix that didn’t do it justice scared me. When I first heard Shiba San’s remix, I was almost a bit nervous, but for no reason really because he transformed my beloved feel good house song into something much dirtier, a jam that had me uncontrollably dancing around my house.

Nick’s Picks @ncollinet

MR•Car/\\ACK & Kaytranada – Ones

Kaytranada is part of a group of talented producers reigniting my love for loungey hip hop and r&b. This one is elegantly simple in all the right ways.

Rihanna – Stay (Marius Hörsturz Edit)

This remix was released back in early 2013 by German producer Marius Horsturz. Play after play however, it continues to evoke emotion and maintain a spot on my ever changing recently played list.

Teenage Mutants & Purple Disco Machine – People

I’m still getting over the cancelation of Teenage Mutants Vancouver show back in December, but rest assured we will be bringing him back real soon. For now, I’ll just have to get down to his latest ass shaker dancing around my living room.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/126718855″ params=”color=000000&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Tensnake – Love Sublime Ft Niles Rodgers & Fiora (Duke Dumont Remix)

Duke Dumont never disappoints. His latest remix turns Tensnakes feel good groover into a hair back and forth whipper. Seriously.

Mimi’s Picks @mimilinyoung

MAX COOPER – AMORPHOUS ROMANCE (FT. TOM HODGE)

Though I usually hesitate to over mention artists, I find that in some instances, highlighting an artist more than once a month is unavoidable. British geneticist turned producer-dj, Max Cooper, is one of those individuals. This track loops a portion of minimalist pianist’s Tom Hodge arrangement, then seasoned with electronic clicks, static blips, crowd noises, and other flecks and fragments. Ethereal, poignant, and tentative, it is a hybrid of natural narrative and science fiction.

MØ – DON’T WANNA DANCE

Danish singer-songwriter, Karen Marie Ørsted, better known as MØ, recently released her newest single, Don’t Wanna Dance, which quite wonderfully achieves the opposite effect in her listeners. Indie-pop with Motown flair gives an innocent, though punchy 3:21 minutes of fun.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/129873688″ params=”color=0f0600&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

KID VIBE – BODY HEAT

Vancouver’s own Kid Vibe has an uncanny ability to create tracks that sound more authentically ’90s than originals from that decade. Body Heat  showcases this heightened concentration of sound features distinctive to that time – smooth yet synthy, bedroom-style rnb-pop, complete with husky filtered Adina Howard vocals (remember Freak/And U Know It?) within a deep house context. Startling but also strangely familiar, it is bright and blisteringly hot.

FRIEND WITHIN – THE RENEGADE (GRAPHICS REMIX)

Sometimes, I rather love loud. Thumping, bumping, glitchy, discordant textures, you know, a song that does the dirty talk for you. Sure to leave you creaming your pants get you wild.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/126027871″ params=”color=070200&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Michael Red – Sunday Morning Shambhala 2012 Living Room mix

mredlivingroommix

For my first post with FutureClassics, here is a mix as appropriate for pre-raving as a post-party wind down. This Shambhala 2012 mix from Vancouver veteran Michael Red is a mellow and relaxing favorite I find myself listening to again and again – for any lovers of the annual BC music fest, it’s sure to bring up fond memories of the beach stage and greeting the hazy morning sunrise, but it’s equally as good for a chilled-out evening at home by yourself. Includes such well-known faves as James Blake and Frank Ocean, as well as an Andy Dixon remix of the soulful vocals of Vancouver’s own Evy Jane. Queue it up and drift away into dreamland.

SKMB on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | Soundcloud | Website

Steph’s Picks:

First up is STWO with his remix of JMSN’s  The One. STWO has been on our radar for quite a while now and has been posted on SKMB several times by a few of our contributors. STWO consistently releases quality remixes of some of our favourite hip hop and R&B tracks as well as his own originals, keeping things sultry, soulful and somewhat relaxing.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/121825987″ params=”color=030404&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Next up on my most played this month is Amyn & Kill Frenzy’s Hooked. There’s nothing I love more than the sweet sound of a  pounding, bass-driven  house jam with warehousey vibes that you can’t help but shake your ass to. This dirty bird knows what’s up and has been releasing nothing but gold recently.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/117443466″ params=”color=030404&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Finally, we have Banks, who’s beautiful and almost angelic vocals give me goosebumps everytime I hear them, with her true gift shining through  her poetic perspectives on love, life and humanity. The ever so talented songstress has colabborated with such artists as TEED, SOHN and Lil Silva to name a few. I couldn’t choose my favourite song of hers, so I have included the two that I am constantly listening to.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/109919093″ params=”color=030404&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Nick’s Picks:

After shamelessly shazaming one of their songs during Vancouver house n techno staple DJ Siavash‘s set at Cajmere a few weeks back, I’ve been in love with andhim‘s delightfully dancey, yet minimal style of house music.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/112750743″ params=”color=000000&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

15 seconds into discovering this next track and my roommate and I were shakin our asses in the living room. Rumbling house with a slightly ghetto vibe just really does it for me. If your a house head like myself then it’s likely that you’ve heard this second colab from Marlon Hoffstadt and fellow German producer Dansson. 8 months old and I’m still groovin to both of these. Join me.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/89980525″ params=”color=000000&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Sam’s Picks:

A collaboration between two well known names in B.C.’s music scene Robbie Slade of Humans and Max Ulis have created some real magic under the name Sabota. Smooth textures and baselines will have you hitting replay on any one of their tracks. These guys know how to get the cool kids to dance.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/118696971″ params=”color=030404&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Soul Button while remaining anonymous delivers some of the most soulful house beats I have ever heard. His latest remix of Florain Rietze’s Treibholz track is no exception. A truly groovy track that adds to his already extensive list of brilliant originals and remixes.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/116045894″ params=”color=030404&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]
