Conrank Interview

1619540_668455893211353_750865228_n

Street Bass has maintained it’s head above Grime in the ever evolving world of Electronic music. In large due to the combined efforts of Dev79 & Starkey. Together with their combined network of labels, Slit Jockey Records & Seclusiasis Records Street Bass is alive and well in all it’s dirty future splendour.

Artists like Conrank have been key to the affirmation and longevity of Street Bass, and also it’s root genre, Grime. Like minded individuals like this have indeed been the foot soliders for these labels and genre. ‘Danger Rank’ made it’s way to the world via Slit Jockey Records yesterday and is now available on Bleep, iTunes, Juno Download, Bookmat and Beatport. We were able to catch up with Conrank to discuss the release, lock down an exclusive mix originally aired on Seclusiasis Radio on Sub FM, below is what we discussed, read on:

Hey man, thank you for taking the time. Hows life?

Life is good man, life is good. Currently based out in shanghai, spending my days eating chinese food and making music, does it get better?

‘Danger Rank’ saw it’s drop last week, with Slit Jockey Records on Juno. It’s also now available for purchase on everywhere. Good feeling having that one under your belt?

Yeah, that EP has been underway for a long time, i have been so excited to let people hear it, i kept it quite close to my chest with a handful of DJ’s getting some early versions to play out like the Doggtown guys and G Jones. I am really proud of it, and even prouder that it was released by such a prestigious label. I was thinking ahhh, wouldn’t it be dope to get in the top 20, and a few days after the release it hit no.2, it’s hard to describe the feeling when you spend hours carving something from scratch and people actually like it, support it and appreciate it. Makes me even more excited for the next release which is already in production haha, no rest for the wicked.

How long has ‘Danger Rank’ been in the works before release? And how does it differ from your previous releases?

It got started summer 2013, my track Boy Tell Em was circulating and i heard Starkey was really into it. We started chatting on FB and decided to look into me doing an EP for Slit Jockey. I really feel like this EP has a complete and unique sound, for example my Ankle Grinder EP was a bit more of a mish mash, not in a bad way, just a lot of the tracks were really different sounding and i don’t just mean format wise or musically i also mean like mixdowns and the quality of sound, but with Danger Rank it feels more together, i feel like my production has come on leaps and bounds in the last year. i had a vision of what i was looking for and Dev and Starkey gave advice on track lists and what came out was exactly what i envisioned, it wasn’t like i followed a strict plan, i just knew what kinda vibe i wanted and where i was at creatively and then let it flow.

Is there an meaning behind the title ‘Danger Rank’?

Yeah, it’s kinda a funny story actually. I was performing at a festival in China…. the band before me wasn’t really connecting with the crowd or getting them hyped, so i made a conscious effort to get on the mic and hype them up when i got on. I went heavy with the music, threw out some CD’s and shouted at the a lot, and next thing you know the security barrier at the front gets pushed over and the chinese police jumped in and shut the sound off. A festival rep came on stage and told me “Your music is too dangerous, we must finish early”. I wrote it up on my FB page and some whitty fella wrote “Danger Rank” in the comments….. and BAM, the name was born.

Once you’ve got a track all said and done, for the most part, how do like to test it’s bass abilities?

It goes through so many tests, i have an ARC2 System in the studio which allows me to reference the track in many virtual environments like “Car Strereo” or “Laptop” . Then i listen on headphones and a few other things and finally it gets the club treatment, which is critical, playing your stuff against other peoples tracks that you know sound dope, if yours hits harder or makes the crowd go nuts, you have a winner.Usually i will tweak it after that, but i am getting better at hitting it out the park first time, like AMPM was only mixed down once, then a couple of DJ’s played it out and i played it and the feedback was awesome, so it got mastered and that was that, with mixing down and producing, it really is a practice makes perfect situation.

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/138873088″ iframe=”true” /]

If you were to pick a piece of hardware that has helped shape the sound of Street Bass over the years, what would it be?

I am pretty much all in the box i am afraid, but obviously 808’s are KEY.. i mean i don’t know how many people actually own an 808, i think most have samples but without the hardware the 808’s wouldn’t be here today.Regarding equipment in general, i love my VXT8 monitors, the bass is so tight, plugins wise i can’t recommend Camel Crush more. It’s sick.. oh and Battery 4… such a versatile and well designed sampler, def gets a lot of use around the scene for chopping up vocals.

Where do you see Street Bass in todays “EDM” hungry world?

Well what we make is kinda tied into the whole trap/twerk sound #turntup #yolo ! hahahahaha… , and the more commercial side of trap is really now tied into the EDM pigeonhole, but what we do is different, it’s more gangster hahaha, this whole street bass, 808, hip-hop grime, thing that myself, Doshy, G Jones, Starkey, Dev79, Bleep Bloop and loads of others are focusing on is something of it’s own, it still holds it’s own in a dance and makes the crowd go just as wild as dropping the most commercial of trap tracks, but it has it’s own sound and it doesn’t rely on using a Miley Cyrus vocal to keep the audience interested. We are keeping it interesting, evolving the sound and therefore i think we are in a strong position in this EDM world.

At what point in your career did you begin producing Street Bass, and what drew you to it?

I have been producing bass heavy music for about 6 years now, i was always into bass, whether it was DnB, dubstep, jungle etc… and actually when i really got my teeth into production i was focusing more on DnB/drumstep, but i started getting tied up with it, my music was becoming very formatted and i wasn’t surprising myself or exciting myself with what i was making, i felt like i was following a chart, rather than getting experimental and you could hear it in the music.. I had been into grime and hip-hop for a long time and it was Doshy who really got me into producing it. I sent him a prodigy remix that was 140 and he loved it, next time he was in Shanghai we got in the studio and made some gold and i loved making it, i felt so free to experiment and be creative and i haven’t looked back. That was like 2.5 years ago. I always talk to other producers who are on the come up or struggling to get an audience about “finding your sound” and it’s so true, you have to find your sound, thats when the tables turn for an artist, when your music has a sound of it’s own. Thats what happened to me, street bass and the whole trap thing really allowed me to find my sound, and people started to take notice.

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/78914382″ iframe=”true” /]

Dunno about your end of the world but everyone seems be getting on with the festival hype. Lots of lineups coming out these days. Do you have any plan to fest this year? Any lineups have your attention?

I’m a bit weird, i find it hard to let go and lose myself like some of my friends are so good at doing at a festival. I am a bit of a control freak haha, plus i am all the way over in China, so it’s a long way to go if i wanna hit up Secret Garden Party for example. But over here in China, i am playing a few festivals over the next couple of months,… First up on April the 27th i am playing Midi Festival , then Strawberry Festival on the 2nd of May and last year i played the Syndicate stage at Intro Festival and it looks like i might be hitting that again this year too in late May.

The subject of reaching an audience is something on many peoples mind these days. And covering a release is a mighty good time to bring it up in interview. Of all the social platforms online have you found a most effective?

Facebook is always a winner, i use it a lot, that and soundcloud obviously. I am in China so Twitter is kinda tough cos it’s blocked here but i use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to get around the great firewall of china, so i still hit up that when i can. I mean, Facebook is blocked over here too, but i find FB to be more social, you can connect with people better, however it also wastes lot of my studio time too… reading random statuses and checking out memes

Leave us with words on your mix, where it was recored, in what mood etc. , ingredients, Shake n’ Bake!

The mix was recorded in my studio in Shanghai, earlier in the month it aired live on Seclusiasis Radio Sub.FM with Dev79. I am a pretty happy positive person so thats where i was at in my head. I just wanted to give a bit of all sides of the whole street bass thing, some grime, hip-hop, trap, more chilled stuff, rowdy stuff.. eclectic but still nestled under one huge umbrella. Anyway, big up and thanks for the support from you guys and also anyone reading this.. i hope you enjoy the mix!

SKMB January Selections

Here’s what a few of our members at SKMB have been diggin’ over the past couple of months!

Tune In Space Out Ep.1

‘Tune In Space Out’ is a monthly radio show on DE Radio focused on highlighting our favourite tunes from the world of house and techno. It is grounded in smooth grooves, but also transverse’ the vast array of electronic music that brings us to a state of ear to ear, star to star, spaced out bliss. Our next episode will be airing on DE Radio at 5pm on February 22.

Steph’s Picks @dubsteph_

Gorgon City – No More

Another gem that’s been on repeat on my iPod is Gorgon City’s No More, a pop-centered house jam that features soulful and sultry vocals from Liv; an effortlessly dreamy track to say the least. These talented guys have been pumping out quality tracks within the past year or so and received an overwhelmingly amazing response for their hit song Ready For Your Love in collaboration with rising star MNEK.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/128302790″ params=”color=070707&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Disclosure – Help Me Lose My Mind (SOHN Remix)

Disclosure and London Grammar’s Help Me Lose My Mind was a staple track of mine this past summer, a song that I had instantly fell in love with and shamelessly overplayed. Naturally, I was happy to see that one of my favourite up and comers SOHN produced a remix of it. SOHN’s remix keeps the original moody atmosphere while trading Disclosures bouncy bass synths for something much more mellow and chilling.

Chris Malinchak – So Good To Me (Shiba San Remix)

Every time I hear French Express artist Chris Malinchak’s song So Good To Me, I feel an overwhelming wave of nostalgia and warmth as I remember some of the best nights of my life where this song was being played, or even just talked about. It reminds me so much of my closest friends and a warehouse party that opened up my mind and heart to new experiences and relationships. This song holds such a dear spot in my heart that the chance of coming across a remix that didn’t do it justice scared me. When I first heard Shiba San’s remix, I was almost a bit nervous, but for no reason really because he transformed my beloved feel good house song into something much dirtier, a jam that had me uncontrollably dancing around my house.

Nick’s Picks @ncollinet

MR•Car/\\ACK & Kaytranada – Ones

Kaytranada is part of a group of talented producers reigniting my love for loungey hip hop and r&b. This one is elegantly simple in all the right ways.

Rihanna – Stay (Marius Hörsturz Edit)

This remix was released back in early 2013 by German producer Marius Horsturz. Play after play however, it continues to evoke emotion and maintain a spot on my ever changing recently played list.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/78758801″ params=”color=000000&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Teenage Mutants & Purple Disco Machine – People

I’m still getting over the cancelation of Teenage Mutants Vancouver show back in December, but rest assured we will be bringing him back real soon. For now, I’ll just have to get down to his latest ass shaker dancing around my living room.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/126718855″ params=”color=000000&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Tensnake – Love Sublime Ft Niles Rodgers & Fiora (Duke Dumont Remix)

Duke Dumont never disappoints. His latest remix turns Tensnakes feel good groover into a hair back and forth whipper. Seriously.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/130796309″ params=”color=000000&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

Mimi’s Picks @mimilinyoung

MAX COOPER – AMORPHOUS ROMANCE (FT. TOM HODGE)

Though I usually hesitate to over mention artists, I find that in some instances, highlighting an artist more than once a month is unavoidable. British geneticist turned producer-dj, Max Cooper, is one of those individuals. This track loops a portion of minimalist pianist’s Tom Hodge arrangement, then seasoned with electronic clicks, static blips, crowd noises, and other flecks and fragments. Ethereal, poignant, and tentative, it is a hybrid of natural narrative and science fiction.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/118523975″ params=”color=0f0600&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

MØ – DON’T WANNA DANCE

Danish singer-songwriter, Karen Marie Ørsted, better known as MØ, recently released her newest single, Don’t Wanna Dance, which quite wonderfully achieves the opposite effect in her listeners. Indie-pop with Motown flair gives an innocent, though punchy 3:21 minutes of fun.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/129873688″ params=”color=0f0600&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

KID VIBE – BODY HEAT

Vancouver’s own Kid Vibe has an uncanny ability to create tracks that sound more authentically ’90s than originals from that decade. Body Heat  showcases this heightened concentration of sound features distinctive to that time – smooth yet synthy, bedroom-style rnb-pop, complete with husky filtered Adina Howard vocals (remember Freak/And U Know It?) within a deep house context. Startling but also strangely familiar, it is bright and blisteringly hot.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/131773175″ params=”color=0b0400&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

FRIEND WITHIN – THE RENEGADE (GRAPHICS REMIX)

Sometimes, I rather love loud. Thumping, bumping, glitchy, discordant textures, you know, a song that does the dirty talk for you. Sure to leave you creaming your pants get you wild.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/126027871″ params=”color=070200&auto_play=false&show_artwork=true” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

A Moment For: The Blunt Sinatras

1002699_651263261569011_1843023462_n
The Blunt Sinatras met some time ago in Boston at a rlease. Their sets lined up one after the other coincidentally and DJ Homewrecker being himself began to MC Moduloktopus’s set. Together the two made an impression on the audience and from there the events of the evening blossomed into a very real partnership as these things often do.

And now the fifth and final track from the ‘Turnt EP’ ,and final step in our build towards our Mix volume 19, released on Club Tapes and available for free download in full.

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/125322217″ iframe=”true” /]

Three days ago it was the birthday of Moduloktopus. To celebrate the day and to give “love back as we mature in age” as an essential part of life the first single from his upcoming ‘Reworktopus’ album say it’s first day. Based on the nature of the song I would have to guess that the track appears early on in the release. Given the gift giving has gone in the opposite direction the sound is mighty generous.

The second half of the duo being the high energy DJ Homewrecker. This mans Twitter game is something else. Look for much more forthcoming from Homewrecker and more on his bass music collective / free label, The Mob.

Neoteric Interview

neo-greenpurp
The internet has been flush with the works and links of one of the industries fastest moving, forward thinking artists / label honcho’s, Neoteric. Main Course Records has been on the tip of every tastemeaskes tongue fom some time now, from the likes of THUMP, Earmilk and many more.

The future certainty of electronic music has been approved by Jay Z, which of course is the most significant opinion that can be offered by any one person on the subject.. Future Classics believes this statement to be true however. It is just a matter of how and with how much outside influence the spectrum will continue to grow that has still yet be determined. MCR is under an eye (so to speak) in this regard, they’re being a free or by donation label and all.

Thankfully, after his lengthy Earmilk interview w. fellow label mates Bot & Astronomar Neoteric still had some words to spare on his career and the label that’s doing it so hard. Read, enjoy, comment, share.

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/120745065″ iframe=”true” /]

I’d love it if we could talk about your career a little bit. You’ve lived in a number of city’s, participating in a variety of scenes, worked in A&R, and so on. Before we jump into Main Course.

Sure. Yeah I’ve moved around a bit in the past few years, but I’d say I came up in Vancouver, DJing and then producing. The last few years I spent around Europe, mainly in Berlin. During that time I was managing Crookers (while they were still a duo) and a few other artists. Recently I’ve moved to London Ontario, which is a couple hours south of Toronto. Musically, I’m all over the map. I started out mainly as a Hip Hop DJ, but the ease and access of Serato really allowed my sets to transform into a reflection of what I loved moreso than what I ‘had’ to play. These days I mainly play and produce house, but also love spaced out cosmic disco stuff, and run a passion project of a podcast called The White Light Mixes (www.whitelightmixes.com). I’m pretty much obsessed with all types of music though.

How long have you been producing and DJing and which came first?

DJing for sure, and I guess in my bedroom for almost 20 years now. Wow, haven’t done that math in a while. Publicly about 15, and travelling/touring for about 6 I think. Producing was always something I dabbled in here and there, but became much more of a focus in the past 3-4 years.

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/97749384″ iframe=”true” /]

How long were you signing other peoples records to other peoples labels? and how did you begin that role in the music industry?

Technically, I started an underground rap label in ’99 called Futility Records which was an interesting outlet and experience, but my main experiences started in 2008 when Switch, who had just moved to LA from the UK came to play in Vancouver. We hung out, had some drinks, talked music and showed each other tracks, and he subsequently asked me to help him find records for his label Dubsided, which was a real spark for me. I eventually started helping friends get their music signed to labels like Dim Mak and Top Billin, and also did 2 compilations on Discobelle Records which featured a bunch of my favourite producers. So, it was pretty natural, and frankly overdue for me to transition that into my own label.

Was there ever a site, model or friend that Main Course followed in terms of running as a free release label? Or was this choice made entirely on your desire to deliver quality music more readily?

It was based around so many random ideas, and certainly inspired by a few people we looked up to over the years. The model of 100% free was something we thought we could make work. I guess thats yet to be seen. But Mad Decent did a great job with Jeffree’s (big up to Vancouvers Paul Devro for his amazing work with that label), and later Fools Gold’s clubhouse series was a sign of a new direction too. Ultimately as artists, I think we wanted to start representing what we loved, and using our connects and profile to get the word out. Musically we wanted to represent pretty much anything good, anything we loved, and always aim to release it in final form as quickly as we can, to keep things fresh.

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/110804479″ iframe=”true” /]

What do you see the roles of current music blogs as? As compared to say, the early thousands.

They are so incredibly important these days. It means SO MUCH for a label like us to be featured – we truly just want the music heard, and we’re willing to spend our own money to give it to you. There is so much good music available now, more than we could ever really digest. So, we live and die by blogs and their support – we’re always down to work out premiers or exclusive content if that helps the rest of our catalog or artists get noticed!

Have you found todays blogshphere to be very accommodating of Main Course’s freelease methodology? And was this a consideration in the labels early conception?

I have, but there’s certainly tons of room for more help haha. Another thing we’ve come to realise is that every site can’t feature everything we release as we have so much coming down the pipeline, be it full releases, our “snacks’ series, our mixes and upcoming podcast series, plus music videos, and of course, our own individual content as separate artists – all that combined is a great deal of content, so it’s good to just follow us via our sites and social feeds so you don’t miss something amazing, haha.

Is the labels main output going to continue to be free releases?

Absolutely. Hopefully, forever. With all our releases we ask people to consider buying it on iTunes or Beatport if they love what they hear and want to support the artist and label. It really does help. Sometimes we might do a giveaway for anyone thats purchased a release – a zip file here or a chance to win a shirt or something. As of now, if we can just recoup our expenses we are more than happy! Finding a way to take it to the “next level” while still keeping things moving fast, and freely could be tricky, but we’re down to figure that out.

Where does Main Course call home?

London, Ontario, Canada (myself), London, UK (Bot) and Los Angeles (Astronomar). Worldwide Domination pending!

How do you feel Main Course stands out from, or fits into, the rest of the label pack? Aside from the roster.

Hmm. It’s kind like how I was in high school. Able to hang out with a bunch of different crowds. The basketball players, the skateboarding stoners, the pretty girls, and the arty introverts. It keeps things exciting, for sure.

Do you like Main Course being referred to as an “Experimental” label?

I think our ‘Everything Free’ model is more experimental than the music, but perhaps i’ve been desensitised to the music. I think a lot of it is.. weird and non-traditional, a bit cutting edge, but I don’t view it as experimental. If anyone does though, that’s cool with us.

Word is that there is a ‘SNACKS’ compilation, and remix compilations en route. What can you say about either of those at this point?

Yeah! The first SNACKS compilation actually just came out! (link: http://bit.ly/MCR13iTunes) and we’re thrilled, as it’s our first full length release. 10 tracks, which were previously offered as Snacks, our free download quick releases. Volume 2 is 10 more tracks and drops Jan 7th! The remix compilation is a solid 8 tracks and out on December 10th. We’ll be giving a track a day away after that. There’s some real heat on there too, a vocal version of Swick & Lewis Cancut’s Hi Score featuring Dancehall artist Di Apprentice, plus some big big remixes from AC Slater, Jeff Doubleau, Raymond Lam, Bot, Nacey, and 2D Noize.

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/playlists/12479162″ height=”300″ iframe=”true” /]

PS. On the subject of submissions. Granted dealing with submissions takes up a great deal of time. But Im curious if one resource or channel, or country, or city even that has proven to be more fruitful in it’s supply of new talent.

It takes a good deal of time, for sure, but it’s fun to listen to what comes in. We generally ignore anything that is some mass CC to a bunch of people – that’s not the approach to go about getting your music signed. Most of it comes via emails, and some through our Soundcloud dropbox (link: www.soundcloud.com/maincoursemedia), but the vast majority of what we sign comes from people we meet when we’re travelling for gigs, meeting the people who are playing at the same kinds of parties as us. Or via friends of artists we already work with. We’re all about relationships and building with new and exciting talent. That said, if you think you got what it takes, check out www.maincourse.me/label and submit your demos to us (contact@maincourse.me). We’ll get back to you if we think it’s something we can work with!

Big thanks to Future Classics for the support!!!!

NOTE: You can check Neoteric live in your respective cities of Calgary, tomorrow at the Hifi Club for the Stirling Agency’s 4YR anniversary party, and then Friday in #Vancouver at the Electric Owl Social Club with Mama Miche + Blondtron + Vinnie the Squid.

All the R&B in the world seems to have set House of the chill and funky nature on the bench to warm it once more. It’s a shame but at the same time House constantly serves as a bountiful place to rest your head once all the first pumping and brain abuse is all said and done. The situation as it is does have good people holding ish down via style and skill. Of course this post is about one particular artist that you should be familiar with. There may be no better time to get aquatinted seeing as how Kanye West just dropped his video for Bound 2 and 222 Oceans may just hold the place for best remix.

Good day sir. How are you these day?
Progressively worse as the snow nears and progressively better as the sun begins to shine. How are you?

What is / was your Halloween costume this year?
After good thought i’ve decided to go as someone who is indecisive.

You gigging for the rest of the spooky season?
I play every saturday so i’m not sure if that counts as the spooky season? If it counts then yes! If it doesn’t then no :(

Is Boston a good place for parties and music?
Not only is Boston the home of the best professional sports, but we also know how to party! Every night of the week there is generally a show you can go see! Thanks to companies like Crush!, MassEDMC, The Brain Trust, Khross, and MMMMAVEN the electronic scene in Boston is growing and helping to change the culture quickly!

Boston is home Moduloktopus. How’d you link with him to form The Blunt Sinatras?
In 2012 I was selected to play Kahbang Music Festival in Bangor, Maine. While there I spent most of my time with a live electronic duo known as Brite Lite Brite. We hit it off and started working together and doing shows together. Both members graduated from Berklee in Boston which is where Moduloktopus also graduated from. We all played a show together and after vibing out we decided to form something that would make an impact on bass music forever.

If you can, describe The Blunt Sinatras in five words or less.
Evolving, Futuristic, Unique, Diverse, Ready.

What are yours and Moduloks goal(s) w. The Blunt Sinatras? If you had to put it in words?
Not to be cliche but I think all artists should want to make a difference in the world. Our goal together is to be heard. With that said we each have our own beliefs on topics and although sometimes they might be different we respect each others opinions and passions. I think this is an important message to everyone in itself.

How many years spinning do you have under your belt?
If you count the 4 years I spun as a hobby in my parents basement then 5. I have only been playing live shows for just over a year.

How often do your ‘Homewrecked!’ episodes come out? What should be people marking on their calendars?
I will be trying to release at least one episode per month. I also have a mixtape series featured on Clubtapes.com called “Neon Combs”
People should mark August 10th on their calendars, its my birthday.

Any spookie / eerie or dark tracks in the included mix?
No, they scare me.

Where was the mix recorded?
In my brain first, then in Serato.

Mat The Alien Interview

4769655537_59d564a82c_z
Augusts end brought about the first annual Aurora Festival in northern Alberta’s Grande Prairie. An exciting new addition to the ever expanding city’s nightlife. The event featured two nights, one Hip Hop / Rap, one Electronic. Unfortunately the city and venue, for safety concerns cancelled one night, forcing the promoter to move to another venue last minute.. These things happen and festival carried on regardless, thankfully. BC’ / the UK’s / Space’s Mat The Alien was one of the performers and we caught some words with him on the subject of festivals and his own goings on.

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/29774737″ iframe=”true” /]

Hello sir, thank you for finding the time. How has your summer been?
Amazing, it was hot and sunny for the most part which is always good so I got to do lots of mountain biking and hanging out with the family in between all the festivals

How was your Shambhala this year? Any notable changes in the event this year?
Shambhala was amazing as always really good atmosphere to perform in and the sound systems and stages just get crazier every year. It’s fun looking out and seeing people who have been to and booked you for shows all over the country.

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/100683464″ iframe=”true” /]

2013 makes it how many Shambhala’s for you?
I’ve lost count but think it’s 12 , I missed 1 when we had our boy ET.

Which festivals have you played / do you have left to play this season?
So far SOnic Bloom in Colorado , Connect in Regina , BassCoast , Shambhala , Rock Of the Woods , Piknic Electonic, Aurora. And coming up U4eyeahh and another US one.

All these festivals work well into your love for traveling #Factoid . What you do love most about travelling?
It’s all fun, especially festivals when you get to see lots of friends and see the best spots in town and eat at the good places. Only bad part is the lack of sleep.

As an abed traveler you are no stranger to Alberta’s North town of Grande Prairie are you?
Yeah I’ve been coming up there for a while now and seen the scene build over the years. There’s always a fun appreciative crowd and good local DJs and promoters making it happen.

On the subject of Aurora Fest (in Grande Prairie AB) , it feels as though the two day festival is a prime example of the sprawl of electronic music and festivals. The Northness of Grande Prairie playing a large part in this impression being lent. I’d love to hear your thoughts on electronic musics growth, and the festivals cultures follow suite.
I think its good the music is getting out there faster and further a field . Years ago you had to be in major city’s to have the record shops with the new music to be able to stay on top of it and now people anywhere in the world can heard all the latest music and styles emerging.

[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/74398710″ iframe=”true” /]

To the best of your knowledge do festivals generally go the way the are supposed to on the first year? In terms of logistics, scheduling and venue?
It’s usually a 3 year building type of thing, people have fun at the first one then the next year come back with their friends and word just starts to spread by word of mouth.

Is Alberta a place non familiar to electronic music in your experience?
No, Calgary has been at the forefront of electronic music with the biggest sound systems PK! and promoters bringing the best newest acts in town town on a regular basis , same with Edmonton
then with the festivals lots of people from Alberta attend and go home then start throwing shows in smaller towns like Lethbridge , Medicine hat , Whitecourt , Red Deer.

Do you like and or use the term EDM?
Not really. I like what flying lotus said theta genres just limit musics creative potential. I play lots of beats these days and I don’t know or want to know what genre they are but they’re just really good.

For those who missed it, what was your Aurora Fest set about?
Had fun out there, just dropped a bunch of bits that I’m feeling these days and combine that with some scratches and stuff.

What or who’s sounds have you been feeling this summer?
So many really , I’m always checking all kind of people but really liking what Om Unit , and An-Ten-Nae are doing these days.

What is forthcoming from Mat The Alien /&+ your label, Really Good Recordings.
The next release is from Albertas Drifts , the current one is vancouvers Self Evident and just continue with more canadian underground music releases of many genres and styles.
