Baby Bash – Suga Suga (Point Point remix)

Point Point is the name given to a group of collaborating French producers. Since these guys are understandably busy working on their own music, releases aren’t frequent, but when they do appear they are always gold. This Baby Bash track has been remixed so many times; despite that, Point Point makes it their own with this original echoing rendition that makes it worth the listen.

Shigeto – No Better Time Than Now

Shigeto (Japanese, “to grow bigger”) is Detroit’s Zach Shigeto Saginaw. Shigeto grew up “spoon-fed on Motown” and studied jazz for three years after nearly flunking out of high school. His richly textured music combines infectious beats, vibrant percussion and intergalactic synths to paint us an appropriately complex image of Detroit with sound.

Kid Atlaas – Fragments

I’ve been posting a lot of beats out of France recently, and there’s a reason for that… French producers fucking slay. Here’s record label Cosmonostro on Fragments, “a look inside the musical mind of Kid Atlaas — one of Europe’s most promising up-and-coming beatsmiths”:

The scope of this record is outstanding, from piano chops that’ll pull at your heartstrings to subs that’ll expose your most disgusted screwface, interspersed with interludes you’ll want to last for days. Opening with the warm crackly tones of dusty wax, ‘Winter Is Coming’ sets a laidback & blunted mood that defines the Kid Atlaas sound. Otherworldly voices drift in and out throughout the EP, most notable on ‘We Shall Overcome’ with a certain famous speech by a certain civil rights figure demonstrating that conscious hip hop with its positive morality is far from dead. The epic closer ‘Make Love In Outer Space’ opens with blissed out synthwork, blasting off into the ruffest drum beat you’re likely to hear this side of the stratosphere before gently easing you back down to earth, bewildered and ready to go right back for more. This is one of those rare records that you’ll have on loop without it ever sounding stale, with each listen more rewarding than the last.

Kid Atlaas passed away last year, but he lives on through the people who continue to discover and appreciate the music that he left behind.

ProleteR – Rookie EP

Electro-swing (or swing-hop) saw a huge rise in popularity over the course of 2014. Any fans of the jazzy emerging genre should get to know the name ProleteR (if they haven’t already). Hailing from Toulouse, France, this producer/beatmaker has this to say about his music:

“You can download, share and use all my stuff as background music for free as long as you keep it non-profit, and that you credit me with links to my pages. Thanks!”

You heard that right, friends – everything ProleteR puts out is free to download! Show your support of the artist – find him on Soundcloud, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Ambassadeurs – M.O.P.E

In 1907, Shoenberg suggested that composers abandon the tonal system. Pitches could be in free relation to each other, setting the practice free. In classical music, this was embraced in compositions such as Webern’s “Drei Kleine Stucke”. That idea was a real game changer. For some interesting contrast, look that one up.

Electronic music does this a lot in its own way; namely, in twitchy remixes, glitch hope, even scratch. It’s the element of spontaneity, which is a kind of freedom that’s afforded to the music of our era. In this track I noticed it with the way the vocals have been chopped up. So satisfying to the ear!

Cosmo’s Midnight – Snare (Feat. Wild Eyed Boy)

Always a treat to see something new from Sydney-based twins Pat & Cosmo. Check out their EP Surge for more sexy, down-tempo music.

More Moods – Nights On The Roof (Jazzvolution) and Love is Real

I’ve posted about Nick Moods from Rotterdam before, but he deserves more attention because his music is so incredibly good at what it’s trying to do, which is capture a mood and crystallize it in sound. The track above, Nights On The Roof, could be blasted from any rooftop during one of October’s icy, tumultuous nights, or maybe on a street corner in the rain, with a jazz band accompanying it. You could be listening to this track and missing home, or somebody that you love. I don’t really know how to describe it, which is pretty weak coming from someone who’s supposed to be blogging about music, but I’d like to call that ineffable quality a sign of real talent (I swear that’s a compliment, not a cop-out… really!).

Love is Real was the song that brought Moods to my attention. Doesn’t it kind of just make you feel like… love… is real? #dammit

Point Point – Morning BJ, Life In Grey, doubleOreo

Point Point is a crew of incredibly talented producers hailing from Paris, France. Through the use of heavily overlaid electronic sound, drum and cymbals, warped vocals and just frankly some kind of witchcraft they create beats to listen to VERY LOUDLY, ON REPEAT, AND FOR MANY MONTHS WITHOUT PAUSE. (In my case, anyway). And get this: they’re all free for download! Enjoy.
